International E Waste Day takes place on 14th October each year. It is an opportunity to encourage positive behaviour change in responsible electrical waste management.

The event was introduced by the WEEE Forum, the international association representing producer responsibility organisations, to raise awareness of the need for e-waste recycling among consumers. As the UK representative for the WEEE Forum, Ecogenesys leads the country’s participation in International E Waste Day (IEWD), working closely with Material Focus and the public facing Recycle your Electricals brand.

According to the latest UN’s General E-waste Monitor, e-waste has grown globally 5 times faster than formal recycling collection rates since 2010. To help tackle this issue the WEEE Forum launched IEWD in 2018 to highlight the importance of responsible management of e-waste in their communities.

In recent years, Ecogenesys has organised awareness events, hosted visits to e-waste facilities, delivered information to member organisations and arranged e-waste collections. In 2024, Ecogenesys installed over 200 temporary e-waste collection points across the UK at schools, libraries, council offices, zero-waste shops and inside office buildings, collecting over 10 tonnes of additional e-waste that may have otherwise been kept in cupboards or attics within homes.

Internationally, 160 organisations from 47 countries on 6 continents officially joined the International E-Waste Day 2024 celebrations and countless more took part by organising diverse awareness raising activities.
