Across Greater Manchester, Carbon Literacy is rapidly becoming a key part of how organisations respond to the climate challenge. With increasing commitments from public leaders, local authorities and businesses, there is growing recognition that building climate knowledge within organisations is essential for delivering meaningful change.
For SMEs in Greater Manchester, Carbon Literacy Training provides a practical starting point to understand environmental challenges and identify realistic actions that can be taken within everyday business operations.
A growing commitment to Carbon Literacy in Greater Manchester
Momentum has been building across Greater Manchester in recent months.
At this year’s Greater Manchester Green Summit, Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham committed to become Carbon Literate before next year’s Green Summit, reinforcing the importance of climate awareness at the highest level of regional leadership.
In response to this commitment, Ecogenesys reached out with an offer to the Mayor and his team to support this ambition through Carbon Literacy Training.
The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has also reaffirmed its commitment to increasing climate understanding across the region, in their reply stating:
“In Greater Manchester we recognise the importance of our residents having a core understanding of the environmental challenges we all face, which is why our Greater Manchester Strategy Delivery Plan includes an ambition for 15% of our city-region being carbon aware by 2030.
“Within GMCA, members of staff have already been trained to deliver Carbon Literacy Training internally, helping embed climate understanding across departments. The Mayor has also confirmed he will join colleagues on a future course as part of GMCA’s commitment to Carbon Literacy and ambition to achieve Gold status by 2030.
Why Carbon Literacy matters for SMEs
While much of the early adoption has been within public sector organisations, Carbon Literacy is increasingly relevant for small and medium-sized businesses across Greater Manchester and beyond.
SMEs are often looking for practical ways to:
- Understand climate risks and opportunities affecting their sector
- Engage employees in sustainability goals
- Respond to customer and supply chain expectations around environmental responsibility
- Align with regional net zero ambitions
Carbon Literacy training helps businesses translate climate science into practical workplace actions, empowering teams to make informed decisions that reduce environmental impact while supporting long-term resilience.
For many organisations, it also provides a credible starting point for developing a sustainability strategy.
